| A smart shopper looks at a product’s entirety: origin, production, packaging, and transport energy. These things ultimately affect the environment and us. | ||||||||||||||
| Buy Recycled Choose recycled products. By doing so you are making the recycling loop complete. Choose Non-Polluting Products Many products you use around your home are made with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that pollute the air. Look for products that are water-based or have low amounts of VOCs. Packaging 30% of our household trash consists of packaging materials. The two main sources of this waste are individually wrapped servings such as juice boxes, and excessively packaged products. Buying in bulk and using reusable containers takes care of half of the packaging problem. The other half of the problem can be dealt with when you do have to purchase something that has excessive packaging by taking time to let the manufacturer know that this is not acceptable to you. To Go Containers Say, “No” to Styrofoam and plastic to go containers. Both are hard to recycle. If you have leftovers, ask for some foil or plastic film wrap instead, every restaurant kitchen has these items on hand. |
